Don't open Outlook to email a file. Just right click on the file, scroll to Send To, click on Mail Recipient, enter the recipient's email address, and click on Send.

You know how the Office 2000 and XP programs all have those icons on the left of the Save As and Open boxes where you can click on My Documents or Desktop to go to that folder? This is called the "Places Bar". If you have Office XP, simply click on the folder you want to add, then click on the Tools button at the top of the Window and choose "Add to 'My Places'. It now appears in the list on the left and you can right click on any icon in the bar and choose to move it up or down to arrange them in the order you like. Also, with a simple right click, you can rename or remove any of the ones you add.

In Word 2003, you can compare documents side by side. Open two documents. Then, from the Window menu of one of them, select the Compare Side By Side command. If you have only two documents open, the command will automatically choose to compare them. If you have three or more documents open, you'll have to select which document to compare with the current file.
A floating toolbar with two buttons will open. If the button on the left is selected, Word will scroll both documents at the same time. Press the button on the right side of the toolbar to return to where the cursor was located when you started comparing.

I am fed up with the two standards of writing a date. When will we people in the world start thinking the world as a global village? For last several years I am using Mail Merge function to create TDS certificates. This year when I used the latest version of office, I noticed that when I merge a date field from excel to word, it automatically changes from dd/mm/yy to mm/dd/yy format. I have already changed the country setting to UK.

I tried a lot of options like Tools - options, Insert - date, Format –field. But I could not change the merged field format from mm/dd/yy to dd/mm/yy. Finally here is how I managed it.
1) Right click on the field and choose "Edit Fields..."
2) Click on Field Codes
3) You will see the line something like this: MERGEFIELD Issue_Date You have to add the date format like this: \@ "dd/MM/yyyy"

To remove all hyperlinks from a Word document, select the document with Ctrl+A, then use Ctrl+Shift+F9 to convert the document to text. A quicker way to remove a single hyperlink is to right click on it and select "Remove Hyperlink" from the context menu.
To select a single sentence hold down the Ctrl key and click anywhere in the sentence.
Roll the cursor to the left margin next to the line and when the cursor changes from the usual "I beam" to an arrow pointing to one o'clock, click to select (highlight) the entire line.
To select an entire paragraph, triple click in the paragraph.
To select a word, double click on the word.

If you find yourself consistently manipulating
entire paragraphs at a time, perhaps there's a
quicker way to cut and paste your words in Word.
Position the cursor [I-bar] anywhere in the
paragraph and hold down ALT+SHIFT. Now, use
the Up and Down arrow keys to move that
block of text around within the document.

Good news: the paragraph will never stop in
the middle of another paragraph.
NOTE: hitting the Left and Right arrow keys
will change the style of the selected text.

In Microsoft Word, if you've lost the place where you last made an edit change, Shift+F5 returns you to that point. Subsequent Shift+F5 key combinations will toggle through the last three edit locations.

PowerPoint 2002 provides new feature – picture compression. You can compress one or all
photographs in a presentation to reduce the final size of the PowerPoint file.

1. Right-click any picture and choose Format | Picture.
2. Choose the Picture tab in the resultant tabbed dialog box and click the ‘Compress’ button.
3. Change the resolution to Web/Screen and choose to apply to all pictures in the document (presentation). Click ‘OK’ and then ‘Apply’ to the next dialog box. Click OK again.
4. Resave the presentation.

There is a test you can use to see if an Add-in is actually your problem. Try starting Word using the /a switch that will stop any add-ins from being loaded. If this solves your error problem, you know it's an add-in causing the trouble.

• Click Start > Run
• In the Run dialog box, type this: winword.exe /a (note the space after exe and before the /a switch)
• Hit the Enter key

A lot of people still don't understand what a template is and how to use it.
If you are the one among all those (yes, I can see you in the crowd), follow this simple tip. Browse to the file you want to use as a template using Windows Explorer. Right click on the file, select Properties, and tick the read-only option in the Attributes section. With read-only enabled, you can still open and edit the file, but must save
changes in another name. Deletion of the file requires confirmation.
